Villa Ocean

Private, peaceful and picturesque, Ocean is a spectacular property which, as its name suggests, lies within a whisper of the soulful sea on Sri Lanka’s dramatic southern coastline. Situated in an extensive 23-acre garden filled with swaying coconut palms and alive with dancing parrots, waltzing butterflies and sky-diving kingfishers, the garden is a paradise for escapists. With no other neighbors in view, the location is entirely private and even a walk along the shell-scattered, wave-sloshed beach at sunset is unlikely to result in anybody interrupting the peace. A delightful jade-green swimming pool to the rear of the property reflects the natural surroundings as a tree protrudes from the middle of its T-shaped design. Timber decking scattered with sunbeds surround the pool whilst a deep veranda is perfectly situated for relaxed and informal daytime dining. Although Ocean is only six years old, its elegant architecture and antique furnishings tell a different tale. Soaring ceilings, gentle archways and deep verandas that wrap around the house on two levels mimic the beautiful designs of the Dutch colonialists and allow gentle breezes to infiltrate and cool the interiors. The house offers a plethora of living and dining areas that are beautifully positioned for admiring the views. With its four beautifully spacious ensuite bedrooms: two doubles, a twin and a single ground floor room with a baby cot, Ocean is particularly suitable for families with younger children. The house is looked after by a welcoming staff team who tend to your every need with traditional Sri Lankan hospitality, whilst trips to nearby Tangalle, national parks, bird-filled wetlands and cultural sights can all be arranged with ease.

Location

Villa Ocean sits in seclusion on the fringe of the village of Kahandamodera, 16km east of Tangalle. Kahandamodera is scattered with simple homes encircled by kitchen gardens whose inhabitants make their living from fishing and farming. Access to the property is well off the main road through the narrow lanes of this rural region, passing paddy fields and small lotus-strewn lakes that see visitations from many birds. The beach to the front of Ocean is often visited by marine turtles and extends to the east across a rocky outcrop towards Kalametiya wetlands and the barren red earth of Ussangoda. To the west it continues towards Tangalle where a small selection of restaurants, banks, pharmacies and supermarkets can all be found.

Things to do

  • Walk along the seemingly endless swathe of Kahandamodera’s glorious sandy beach to the front of the villa, collecting shells as you soak in the serenity of this secluded location.
  • Explore villa Ocean generous garden; a parkland oasis filled with coconut palms and coastal foliage adored by parrots, kingfishers and peacocks.
  • Take off in the afternoon to the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary and enjoy a sunset punt on the lagoon with one of the local fishermen as the sky slowly turns a rich red.
  • Head to the mysterious Ussangoda whose red barren earth it is believed is a result of a meteorite hitting this area years ago. The views of the local area can be seen beautifully from here whilst the cliff top vistas out to sea are spectacular.
  • Rekawa, a short drive from the villa, is home to the island’s only marine turtle sanctuary. Out of the five species of endangered marine turtle present in Sri Lanka, four are regular visitors here as they make their way onto the beach at night to lay their eggs in the sand; a sensational moonlit spectacle. Come here for nightly turtle watches to additionally witness baby turtles hatching and making their perilous way to the sea. The villa staff will pack you a picnic of snacks and refreshments so you can co
  • On the way to Mulkirigala we recommend you stop en route at the brass making village of Angulmaduwa where you can witness the craftsmen in action and buy yourself a unique souvenir to take home.
  • Visit the Maduwanwalla Palace, which is an example of Sri Lankan opulence in that it is made up of a number of buildings that now lay in relative ruin.
  • Whale and dolphin watching trips embarking from Mirissa Harbour will delight the whole family; combine your trip with a visit to Dondra lighthouse, Matara’s forts and Mirissa Beach where you can also sea kayak, go coastal cruising and sailing.
  • Go on safari! Bundala – a park famous for its crocs and birdlife - is located within easy reach of the villa Ocean. Safaris to Uda Walawe (beloved of elephants) and Yala – famed for leopards and bears amongst others – are also easily achievable as morning or afternoon trips from the villa.
  • Worth the drive is the Handunugoda Tea Factory in Ahangama, whose tea bushes are the closest of any in Sri Lanka to the sea. Famous not only for its unique black tea but also for its white tea which, since so little is harvested, is the world’s most expensive variety. Any tour of the factory includes a tea tasting session and a slice of homemade cake.
