Joss

Perfectly situated 100 metres from Batu Belig Beach in Greater Seminyak, 30 minutes from the airport and minutes from the boutiques, restaurants and nightlife that make Seminyak so appealing, the elegant Villa Joss embraces all the comforts and glamour of modern tropical living while preserving an exotic atmosphere and distinctive Balinese charm. Designed by one of Bali’s premier architects, the quality of the design and craftsmanship is evident throughout this four-bedroom villa, making ample use of leather, recycled teak and other beautiful organic materials, as well as a remarkable collection of fine art and Majapahit period stone carvings, to capture the style and spirit of Bali. Completed in August 2010, the contemporary Balinese architecture of Villa Joss features a living room and dining room pavilion, a four bedroom pavilion, an entertainment room and business centre, and an open air 'bale' lounge pavilion in the spacious gardens with a 16-metre swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi. The architect's other work can be seen in some of Seminyak's finest venues including Ku De Ta Villa Joss is named after the owner's daughter. The fine art traditions of Bali have been highlighted with care in Villa Joss. Upon entering the main gate, guests are greeted by a stone relief carving of Balinese Gamelan musicians which dates back to the Majapahit Kingdom's retreat from Java to Bali in the 1500's. The original carving is found in one of Bali's oldest temples, Pura Dalem in Desa Singepadu Tengah, and was reproduced at Villa Joss by a family of artisans from Batu Bulan, the most famous stone-carving village in Bali. The gorgeous entrance to Villa Joss involves a covered walkway bordered by lotus ponds with Koi fish; all draped in a hanging garden of green vines leading up to a serene seated stone Buddha set against a cascading waterfall. The bedrooms and living spaces of the 4 bedroom Villa Joss showcase beautiful fine art paintings and limited-edition litho prints by some of Indonesia's best-known artists. Each bathroom features a stone relief carving detailing different aspects of the main temple carving inside the main gate. The walled garden and graceful interiors offer an abundance of space, natural light and separate places to relax. Children can enjoy a BOSE surround sound movie on the 48" flat screen TV in the entertainment pavilion while one group of adults enjoy some reading in the living room, and another group of adults lounge, surf the internet or watch sports on the 45" flat screen TV in the garden 'bale'. The pool deck is punctuated with big pots of flowering lotus. The interiors of the villa have been lovingly furnished, accented with colour and completed with delightful attention to detail. The owners have made every effort to employ 'Green Friendly' technologies in the construction of Villa Joss

Location

Villa Joss is nestled in the heart of the Batubelig area in greater Seminyak, on Bali’s south-western coast just 100 metres from the beach, 30 minutes from the international airport (depending on traffic) and 10 minutes’ drive from the trendy Seminyak area, with its glamorous lifestyle. It is only 10 minutes from the west end of the Sunset Road, a speedy bypass route from the airport. There are a number of simple warungs (eateries) within easy walking distance of Villa Joss and it is just down the street from the famous Métis fine dining restaurant and the equally famous but more casual Naughty Nuri’s Warung barbeque rib house. Batubelig Beach is quiet and peaceful, while Seminyak Beach is much busier and a fun place for people watching. All along this coastline the waves are huge and the domain of the surfers. The expansive beach is a place where the local and expatriate communities gather every evening to enjoy Bali’s legendary sunsets and where guests may chance upon Balinese Hindu ceremonies involving offerings cast into the sea. Seminyak and the neighbouring area of Petitenget boast a plethora of chic cocktail bars, exciting nightclubs, sumptuous spas, fashionable boutiques and famous restaurants including Ku De Ta, Nutmegs at Hu’u, La Lucciola, Sarong and Sardine. Villa Joss is conveniently located close to all of the main shopping malls, Waterbom Park, and many other tourist attractions. The location offers easy access up to the mountains and rice terraces on Bali’s western slopes. It is just over one hour’s drive from the famous cultural and artistic town of Ubud, and just 10 minutes’ drive from the west end of the Sunset Road, gateway to the island. The nearby ‘Nirwana Bali Golf Course’ was designed by Greg Norman, and voted the number one golf course in Asia. It is also situated near the dramatic, waved-lashed sea temple of Tanah Lot.For horse lovers, the ‘Umalas Equestrian Centre’ is just a few kilometres away.

Things to do

  • Explore Seminyak and you’ll find it as a very popular area with plenty of luxury spas and hotels abound. Owing to its high density of high end shopping, combined with the clustering of many fine eating establishments, it has rapidly become one of the most well known tourist areas on the island.
  • Seminyak Beach and Petitenget Beach is a continuous expanse of grey sand stretching in both directions as far as the eye can see. To the south it becomes Legian Beach and then Kuta Beach, but is noticeably quieter than both. The sunsets here are famous, and opportunities abound to mix with the glitterati who frequent the high end beach front establishments such as Ku De Ta.
  • Another way to enjoy Bali’s beautiful scenery is to try horseback riding along the southern beaches and through the lush rice terraces of Kerobokan for a few hours – accompanied all the way by a professional guide who will put your comfort and safety first. This service is provided by Umalas Stable Equestrian.
  • For intermediate surfers who wish to find a quieter beach to enjoy wave riding with fewer competitors, the beaches at Seminyak can be your best possible option. The beach is cleaner than Kuta, there are fewer beachside hawkers and the waves are their best for surfing in the early morning.
  • Even though there aren’t as many nightlife spots in Seminyak as in Kuta, most of the Lounges and Clubs offer elegant interior design with their daybed facilities, poolside bars, lively performances, sexy dancers and extensive array of fine quality cocktails martinis, wines, champagnes and vodkas. Well-known international DJs twirl the tables to fill the air until dawn.
  • Although Pura Petitenget (found at the T-junction on Jalan Petitenget) is not as big and as popular as Bali’s other major temples of Pura Besakih, Pura Uluwatu and Pura Ulun Danu, it is famous for its legend. This temple is believed by Hindus to be one of nine pillars known as 'Kayangan Jagat', temples of nine wind eyes built in the 11th Century by Empu Kuturan (a Javanese Sage) who came to Bali bringing religious law and the formation of traditional villages.
