Villa Hansa

The American owner’s spiritual leanings and passion for Indonesian culture and surfing is evident throughout this delightful property – named after Hansa, Goddess of Knowledge. It’s no coincidence that Villa Hansa is within easy access of a string of some of Bali’s finest surfing beaches; Pererenan Beach is a mere 300m walk away and legendary surfer’s haunt, Echo Beach, ten minutes by car. Guests can use the owner’s large personal collection of surfboards, but if surfing sounds like too much effort, there’s always the 18m infinity-edge pool – centre-stage of pretty gardens leading down to a river and terraced rice- fields – or the dedicated yoga room, which also doubles as a TV / entertainment room. Spirituality is a recurring element, from the four ensuite bedrooms named after Hindu Gods to Tibetan prayer flags and constantly burning incense, chosen for its therapeutic qualities. Manager Asmara is also the villa’s spiritual advisor and expert on Balinese traditions. He is more than happy to impart his wisdom and arrange guest participation in traditional Hindu ceremonies, such as the villa’s monthly full moon blessings or rituals at the village temple. As avid collectors of Indonesian art and antiques, the owners' personally sourced Indonesian pieces – including fine old textiles, antique furniture and objects – are tastefully displayed in all rooms. Committed to eco-friendly practices and a healthy lifestyle, food is predominantly local organic, recycling is practiced and household cleaning materials are biodegradable. Supporting the local community, the villa established the Hansa Foundation, helping fund village children in the arts, sports and environmentally- aware education. With its positive energy and genuine Balinese hospitality, Villa Hansa offers a relaxed bolt-hole, where the extremely friendly staff of ten – as well as three resident dogs – are all part of one big happy family.

Location

Surrounded by rice fields and picturesque rural scenery, Villa Hansa is situated in Delod Padonan, one of several villages within the sleepy coastal suburb of Pererenan, part of Bali’s Badung District. This small community offers a predominantly local flavor and opportunities to experience traditional Balinese culture; unlike other villages in the area, there is, as yet, no foreign development here. Hiking through the surrounding rice fields is possible and several naturally beautiful beaches renowned for their surf are within easy access. The nearest beach is Pererenan, at a walkable 300m, while legendary surfing spot, Echo Beach, is ten minutes by car. Bali’s premier sports and leisure club, the Canggu Club, is a 20-minute drive and offers upscale international-standard dining and leisure facilities. Bali’s most fashionable and cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak, is around 25 minutes’ drive south; crammed with chic boutiques and hip n’ happening bars and restaurants.

Things to do

  • Villa Hansa encourages guests to experience traditional Balinese culture. Ask cultural guru manager Asmara to check the Hindu calendar and accompany you to a local ceremony in the village temple or perhaps further afield in Bali.
  • If you’ve always dreamed of galloping along a beach or riding through villages bordered by rice fields, now’s your chance. Bali Horse Adventure, located five minutes from the villa, can arrange horse riding tours, as well as children’s riding lessons and horse-drawn carriage outings.
  • Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali’s prestigious Canggu Club, with its state-of-the-art gym and tennis and squash courts. Round off your work-outs with some fine international dining, then stock up on gourmet goodies at the nearby Deli.
  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali’s best surfing beaches, all within easy access. Pererenan Beach is just a 300m stroll or motorbike ride away. Along this stretch of naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach, under ten minutes by car, is the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali’s legendary sunsets.
  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Bali’s first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques and its award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies. If you’re planning a honeymoon, this makes a wonderful first night venue before continuing on with your villa stay.
  • View Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
  • Fashionistas, trendiest and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars – including much hyped, Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive westwards to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities – treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most important temples.
