Within the solid western architectural design, interiors are of the highest quality and abundant use is made of natural materials such as mahogany and granite. With an eye for traditional culture, the villa is tastefully adorned with exquisite Indonesian artworks, décor and antique pieces: framed antique Sulawesi warrior jackets line the corridors and carved Balinese chaise langue are thoughtfully provided on porches. Frangipani flower greetings on arrival and a traditional floral and bamboo welcome piece placed on each bed are some of the Balinese rituals respectfully observed. The owner’s love of global travel is also evident, with a vintage Italian Vespa Scooter provided for countryside forays, Buddhist statues dotting the gardens and antique carved African chairs. The two acre property offers a great sense of spaciousness and sanctuary. Reflecting the tropical lifestyle, la piece de la resistance is a variety of outdoor areas to peacefully relax and reflect. All five ensuite bedrooms feature generous-sized balconies to savour Canggu’s rice fields and villa gardens, while the detached Rainforest Cottage boasts a jungle-style, outdoor bathroom. Beyond the pool the beautifully landscaped gardens, dissected by a small river, slope down to a second river and waterfall. Step by step, through manicured lawns, trees and exotic blooms, the terraced gardens reveal a Balinese open-air lounge pavilion, three thatched balés (traditional gazebos) and a private spa – for the exclusive use of guests – beside the calming effects of a rain forest river. Built in 2008 and now available for rental, this cherished family home extends a heartfelt Balinese welcome with a team of local staff. Ever-friendly but discreetly present, they are the icing on the cake of this truly magnificent property.

Location

Surrounded by rice fields and charming agricultural scenery, East Residence and Spa rests in Tumbak Bayuh, one of several villages in the district of Canggu – a sleepy, but increasingly awakening, coastal locale. The immediate vicinity comprises mainly local community schools, temples, small restaurants and shops, yet Bali’s premier sports and social club, the Canggu Club, is just five kilometres away, with international-standard dining and leisure amenities. A string of wildly beautiful beaches renowned for their surf are within a ten to 15-minute drive of the villa, including the legendary Echo Beach. Drive eight kilometers south of Tumbak Bayuh and you’ll reach Seminyak, Bali’s most fashionable and cosmopolitan destination, crammed with chic boutiques and hip and happening bars and restaurants.

Things to do

  • Explore Canggu’s scenic rice field landscape and rural villages on the villa’s Vespa scooter; a great opportunity to interact with the local community, plus sample Balinese fare in simple warungs (local- style restaurants).
  • Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali’s prestigious Canggu Club, fifteen minutes away, with its state- of-the-art gym, tennis and squash centre. Round off your work-outs with some fine international dining, then stock up on gourmet goodies at the nearby Canggu Deli.
  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali’s best surfing beaches, only ten to fifteen minutes away. Among the string of naturally beautiful beaches, don’t miss long-time surfers haunt, Echo Beach – but all are in prime position for Bali’s legendary sunsets.
  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Listed in Robb Report (World’s Best of the Best), Bali’s first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques. The boutique hotel’s award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies.
  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali’s biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savoured at sunset
  • Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
  • Fashionistas, trendies and shop-a-holics should hot foot it down to Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars – including the much hyped, Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive west to explore the unchartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black sand beaches dotted with fishing communities – the treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most important temples.
