Location

A few kilometres to the northwest of Canggu, a towering banyan—one of the ‘elders’ of the tree kingdom—heralds the turning to Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms. The village of Seseh still retains the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see the rice being planted and harvested in the fields, fishing boats returning in the morning with the night’s catch, as well as frequent, colourful processions to the large beachside temple. There are no international restaurants here, but you might just see a barong dancing on the street. A Barong is a high-spirited, benevolent beast representing the power of good; danced by two men inside an ornate costume. The good news, for folks who want to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of old Bali, is that the people of Seseh encourage and welcome congenial visitors. There are now a number of private rental villas in this area, which have seamlessly integrated without in any way detracting from the simplicity and charm of the two villages. Historically, the fishing village of Seseh was important in the 18th century when the temple was established as the major temple of the former Kingdom of Mengwi. At that time it was also a small trading port, inhabited by a number of families of Chinese decent. Likewise there are records of Chinese- style shop houses in Banjar Sogsogan during this period. Today, this is an ideal destination for those who want to get lost in the beauty of the countryside, and for those who want to engage with the local people and gain privileged insights into the Balinese Hindu lifestyle. Villa Belong Dua is one hour’s drive from Bali's International Airport and 30 minutes drive from the busy shops, world-class restaurants and vibrant nightlife of Seminyak. It is also 30 minutes drive from Nirwana Golf Course, one of the best golf courses in Asia; and close to Tanah Lot, Bali's most dramatic and venerated sea temple. The famous surfing beaches of Canggu and Pererenan are within walking distance. The majority of the island’s shopping malls, theme parks and tourist attractions are also within reach.

Things to do

  • Explore Canggu’s scenic rice field landscape and rural villages on the villa’s Vespa scooter; a great opportunity to interact with the local community, plus sample Balinese fare in simple warungs (local- style restaurants).
  • If you’ve always dreamed of galloping along a beach or riding through villages bordered by rice fields, now’s your chance. Bali Horse Adventure, located few minutes from the villa, can arrange horse riding tours, as well as children’s riding lessons and horse-drawn carriage outings.
  • Sports enthusiasts should head to Bali’s prestigious Canggu Club, with its state-of-the-art gym and tennis and squash courts. Round off your work-outs with some fine international dining, then stock up on gourmet goodies at the nearby Deli.
  • Catch a wave, or several, at some of Bali’s best surfing beaches, all within easy access. Pererenan Beach is just a 300m stroll or motorbike ride away. Along this stretch of naturally beautiful beaches, Echo Beach, under ten minutes by car, is the most famed surfers haunt, but all are in prime position for Bali’s legendary sunsets.
  • On Canggu Beach, be sure to visit mystical Hotel Tugu Bali. Bali’s first museum-hotel is studded with priceless Indonesian artworks and antiques and its award-winning spa offers age-old Eastern therapies. If you’re planning a honeymoon, this makes a wonderful first night venue before continuing on with your villa stay.
  • Make the de rigueur pilgrimage to sacred Pura Tanah Lot (8km), one of Bali’s biggest tourist magnets. Perched high on a craggy, wave-lashed rock, this ancient sea temple is best savored at sunset; be sure to receive a blessing from the Hindu Priests.
  • Alternatively, view Tanah Lot from the 12th hole of Nirwana Bali Golf Course. Bordered by ocean and rice fields just down from the sea temple, no wonder this championship-standard course (designed by golf legend, Greg Norman) is frequently voted number one in Asia.
  • Fashionistas, trendiest and shop-a-holics should hot-foot it down to Bali’s most cosmopolitan enclave, Seminyak. Here, you can indulge for hours in the glut of stylish, global-inspired restaurants, chic boutiques and hipper-than-thou bars – including much hyped, Ku Dé Ta, on Seminyak beachfront.
  • Drive westwards to explore the un-chartered West Bali region, where the charming Tabanan Regency reveals terraced rice fields of emerald green, volcanic mountains and black-sand beaches dotted with fishing communities – treasures that Bali is famed for.
  • For a day of culture and dramatic landscapes, drive directly north from the villa to the mountain town of Bedugul. From here, explore three volcanic lakes, including Bratan, with its photogenic and stunningly positioned Pura Ulun Danu – one of Bali’s most important temples.
